DID YOU KNOW??
- That African American hair is more prone to damage- (breakage and dryness), especially in the winter. It may look tougher but it’s actually more fragile than Caucasian hair.
- That greasy products actually (clog hair follicles and) cause other problems including scalp folliculitis and acne on the forehead and temples (pomade acne).
- Silicone-based products are best for use as daily hair moisturizers. (Look for dimethicone) as key ingredient.
- Wearing hats can be very damaging to hair, especially for men, so it’s important to keep hair moisturized (with light oil) or wear hats with natural fibers during the winter.
- Folliculitis is an infection of the hair follicles. Severe cases may cause permanent hair loss and scarring. It usually appears as small, white-headed pimples around 1 or more hair follicles. They usually itch but are rarely painful. Superficial follicitis often clears by itself in a few days, but deep or reoccurring folliculitis may need medical treatment.
- Stress doesn’t cause your hair to gray!! Hair turns gray when the cells that produce pigment stop doing their job. Genes mostly determine when we go gray.
- Extreme emotional or physical stress can trigger two types of hair loss. 1st Telogen effluvium- due to illness, injury, or surgery. It causes a large number of hairs to stop their growing phase and shift into a resting phase. 2 to 3 months later the resting hairs suddenly start to fall out. In these cases, hair eventually grows back in 6 to 9 months. 2nd Alopecia areata- white blood cells attack the hair follicle, which stops hair growth. Within weeks, the effected hair falls out. With alopecia areata, hair loss starts as a small round patch but may spread to the whole scalp and sometimes the body hair as well. The hair may grow back and treatment may be necessary.
- The hormones secreted in your body during pregnancy will cause your hair to grow faster and fall out less! But the changes are not permanent. Most women lose a significant amount of hair in the postpartum period or after you stop breastfeeding.
- Pregnancy can also sometimes cause premature hair loss.
